The study deals with the devel\u00adop\u00adment of the large scale region\u00adal dis\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adties in Slo\u00adva\u00adkia in rela\u00adtion to the coun\u00adtry\u2019s EU mem\u00adber\u00adship, focus\u00ading on South\u00adern Slo\u00adva\u00adki\u00ada, pop\u00adu\u00adlat\u00aded by the Hun\u00adgar\u00adi\u00adan minor\u00adi\u00adty. Before 2004 for al\u00admost 8 decades this reg\u00adion had been han\u00addled as periph\u00ader\u00adal by the suc\u00adces\u00adsive gov\u00adern\u00adments of Czecho\u00adslo\u00adva\u00adkia and Slo\u00adva\u00adki\u00ada.<\/p>\n
With the EU mem\u00adber\u00adship of the coun\u00adtry, a new area-struc\u00adture appeared, which shows the signs of a new eco\u00adnom\u00adic and social area-struc\u00adture and also a trans\u00adformed region\u00adal set\u00adtle\u00adment dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion. Slo\u00adva\u00adkia\u2019s entry to the Euro\u00adpean Union is a huge, per\u00adhaps one in a life\u00adtime chal\u00adlenge and oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty for the inhab\u00adi\u00adtants of South\u00adern Slo\u00adva\u00adki\u00ada, which must be cap\u00adi\u00adtal\u00adized. How\u00adev\u00ader, we can\u00adnot expec\u00adt, that the EU mem\u00adber\u00adship auto\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly means eco\u00adnom\u00adic and social rise for the reg\u00adion. The EU mem\u00adber\u00adship pro\u00advides only an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to reduce the dif\u00adfer\u00adences in the level of devel\u00adop\u00adment of cer\u00adtain region\u00ads, an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty for a change of struc\u00adture and an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to catch up. The actu\u00adal eco\u00adnom\u00adic and social rise itself depends on the regions them\u00adselves, whether they live with the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty or not. Nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly if we want to end South\u00adern Slo\u00adva\u00adkia\u2019s periph\u00ader\u00adal char\u00adac\u00adter, we need a favourable cen\u00adtral gov\u00adern\u00admen\u00adtal and region\u00adal gov\u00adern\u00admen\u00adtal polit\u00adi\u00adcal atmos\u00adphere (the peri\u00adod between 2002 and 2006 is the best exam\u00adple for such cen\u00adtral gov\u00adern\u00admen\u00adtal lev\u00adel), since dur\u00ading the divi\u00adsion of resources (EU or nation\u00adal) and devel\u00adop\u00admen\u00adtal invest\u00adments, the regions inhab\u00adit\u00aded by Hun\u00adgar\u00adi\u00adans often fall vic\u00adtim to the Slo\u00advak nation\u00adal\u00adis\u00adtic polit\u00adi\u00adcal deci\u00adsions (re\u00adgions and town\u00adships inhab\u00adit\u00aded by Slo\u00advak\u00ads, which are already mo\u00adre devel\u00adope\u00add, are the ma\u00adjor ben\u00ade\u00adfi\u00adcia\u00adries).

The region\u00adal dis\u00adcrep\u00adan\u00adcies in South\u00adern Slo\u00adva\u00adkia are caused by the struc\u00adture of the region\u00ads\u2019 econ\u00ado\u00admy (sec\u00adtors pro\u00adduc\u00ading lit\u00adtle added value are dom\u00adi\u00adnan\u00adt), by the lack of good qual\u00adi\u00adty traf\u00adfic infra\u00adstruc\u00adture and high\u00adly edu\u00adcat\u00aded human resources, and by the restric\u00adtive char\u00adac\u00adter of the Slovak-Hungarian rela\u00adtion\u00ads. There\u00adfore the pol\u00adi\u00adcy of region\u00adal devel\u00adop\u00adment has to approach the prob\u00adlem in it\u2019s com\u00adplex\u00adi\u00adty in the fol\u00adlow\u00ading years, and the sup\u00adport must come in a con\u00adcen\u00adtrat\u00aded form, and it must be struc\u00adtural\u00adly and region\u00adal\u00adly tar\u00adget\u00aded. The finan\u00adcial back\u00adground of the eco\u00adnom\u00adi\u00adcal-\u00adso\u00adcial rise of the regions inhab\u00adit\u00aded by Hun\u00adgar\u00adi\u00adans may be based on their own resources, on the budg\u00adet of the town\u00adship\u00ads, the regions and of the coun\u00adtry, but most sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly on the resources of the EU. Draw\u00ading from the\u00adse, how\u00adev\u00ader requires active sys\u00adtems of infor\u00adma\u00adtion and train\u00ading\/\u00adcon\u00adsult\u00ading for those involved in the region\u00ads.
