István Csernicskó: The status of languages and the official bilingualism in Transcarpathia/Subcarpathia in the period of 1867–2010

In the course of the 20th century the region of Transcarpathia/Subcarpathia belonged to a number of different states: the Austro–Hungarian Empire, Czechoslovakia, the independent Carpathian-Ukraine, the Hungarian Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and finally to Ukraine. In this paper I would like to outline the main features of the regional language policies of these states. I will describe the status of languages in different eras. It will be discussed how many official languages were used in the region in certain periods. Finally, the analyses of the state of the language policy of the present Ukraine will be detailed.
