IlÂdiÂkó N. Császi: The CharÂacÂterÂisÂtics of the ZobÂoÂralÂja Place Names
The mateÂriÂal of names from the point of view of their meanÂing, is very dividÂed: the author disÂtinÂguishÂes 25 name types at a relÂaÂtiveÂly small terÂriÂtoÂry, from this withÂin the inner terÂriÂtoÂry 18, from the names of waters 16, from the names of borÂders 19.
The author states that for this area it is charÂacÂterÂisÂtic that the perÂsonÂal names have very slight role in givÂing names for places. Since in ZobÂoÂralÂja small estates are not charÂacÂterÂisÂtic, and in givÂing names for streets inside the terÂriÂtoÂry we canÂnot find inmoÂtiÂvatÂed names that is so charÂacÂterÂisÂtic in the mothÂer counÂtry, the numÂber of place names creÂatÂed from the names of perÂsons is very litÂtle.
N. Császi conÂsidÂers the catÂeÂgoÂry of names of terÂriÂtoÂries, cities, and/or borÂder parts very imporÂtanÂt, since the method of name creÂation from already existÂing place names play an imporÂtant role in name givÂing.
On the other hand, comÂmon word eleÂments and already died out dialect words in them, are presÂent in name givÂing strongÂly. Also, the effect of the state lanÂguage is powÂerÂful in name usage.
In the examÂined regÂion, the most freÂquent are the lexÂeÂmas relatÂing ecoÂnomÂic and ownÂerÂship hisÂtoÂry. They are presÂent as basic and addiÂtionÂal parts totalÂly 384 times, that means 14, 2 per cent of the total occurence. The secÂond most freÂquent name types belong to sitÂuÂaÂtion comÂparÂisonÂs: 308 occurence = 11,4%. The surÂface of ZobÂoÂralÂja is very dividÂed, that is eviÂdenced by the big numÂber of namÂing of the terÂrain (224 = 8,3%). In the name creÂation, they are presÂent not only as basic partÂs, but also as addiÂtionÂs. The fifth most freÂquent name type indiÂcates natÂuÂral plants (197 = 7,3%).
The socialÂisÂtic large-sÂcale econÂoÂmy did not decrease the HunÂgarÂiÂan name mateÂriÂal in a large extenÂt, since mainÂly these were transÂlatÂed to the state lanÂguage, those that could not be transatÂed, were pubÂlished with SloÂvak spelling on maps. The SloÂvak lanÂguage map data conÂfirm that dialect words that were recentÂly presÂent in the regÂion, disÂapÂpeared from the HunÂgarÂiÂan lanÂguage usage, they were pubÂlished in the maps transÂlatÂed to the state lanÂguage amost in unchanged form (Salga ~ Å alÂga, KurÂdok, PoronÂna ~ PoronÂa, CseterÂtek ~ ÈeterÂty) or they were idenÂtiÂfied with SloÂvak comÂmon words (Heréb ~ HrÃb
